Born in Osaka (Japan), Mariko Mitsuyu (In Japan: Mariko Tsuboi) began learning the piano at the age of five. While studying medicine at Kyoto University, she received piano lessons from Prof. Ruriko Fujimura  and Prof. Max Egger.
Since 1980 she has been living in Germany. At first she conducted ophthalmological research at the Max Planck Institute for Physiology in Bad Nauheim.
In 1983 she decided to devote herself full-time to music and entered the conservatoire in Frankfurt am Main, where she began studying the piano under Prof. Joachim Volkmann. Having passed the final examinations as a concert pianist 1988, she taught at the conservatoire in Frankfurt, and since 1994 has taught at the Felix Mendelssohn Conservatoire in Leipzig, where she received an honorary professorship in 2000.
She was a prizewinner in the 5th International Chamber Music Competition in Trapani (Italy). She has played many piano concertos with different orchesters, and given concerts in Germany, England, Italy, the United States, Japan, Egypt, Slovenia and Czech Republic. She has played with many internationally well known musicians like Alto Noras (cello), Phillipe Boucly (flute), Rogger Bobo (Tiba), Mariana Sirbu (violin) and Stefanie Moldovan (soprano).
She has given several master courses for piano and chanber music.
She has been the accompanist for several music copetitions.
